Happy Friday, Everyone! I hope everyone is staying dry today. Last Friday we focused on motivational quotes and I thought that this Friday we could talk about taking that motivation and moving up the ranks at work.

A lot of articles I’ve read talk about the right things to say at work to get you that promotion. Few and far between mentioned what not to say and I do think that is equally important. Nobody wants one thing they said to be the reason they did not get the promotion. The article I am referencing, Want to move up? 12 Phrases to kick! written by Ilya Pozin was something I stumbled across while on LinkedIn. I will leave the link to his article down below. I wanted to pick my favorite phrases he mentioned and take a deeper look.

1. “I’ll try” – To me when someone says this it leaves a cloud of doubt lingering in my head. And Ilya agrees!

“Not only will you eliminate the trust of coworkers, you’ll also place doubt in the minds of your customers and clients.”

Always say I will – it’s better to say I will then come back and ask questions and learn as opposed to saying I will try and demonstrating that lack of confidence right off the bat!

2. “That’s not my job” – As a worker you are part of a team, a team that works together. No one person is better than anyone else. Right off that bat you are giving off the “I’m too good for that” attitude.

“This type of self-serving phrase won’t just anger your coworkers or manager, it could also cost your your job.”

You are a part of a team and other people count on you so make sure you treat them like you would want to be treated. Golden Rule anyone?

3. “I’m too busy” – Everyone is busy! Chances are you are not the only one who has a full plate to tackle by end of day. Avoid saying you’re too busy and try Ilya’s way to address it so your coworkers won’t have a negative taste left in their mouth after talking to you.

“Once I tackle this task, I’ll be happy to take a look at that.”

This way you demonstrate that you are more than willing to help (I’m sensing a teamwork theme here) and you will do it right after you finish whatever you may be working on at the moment.

Ilya goes on to even talk about what not to say during an interview. Make sure to check his article out below and have a wonderful weekend!
