Post-hire shock in a leading cause of turnover in the workplace.  Post-hire shock occurs when the job or organization is not as the new hire expected.  Unfortunately, many things that are promised in the interview process never are granted. Also, if employees feel under or over whelmed during the first few weeks, they may start to rethink their choice.

Post-hire shock can be avoided by having numerous things set in stone. You need a great on-boarding package, the ability to have open communication and for the whole team to be on the same page.

What does post-hire shock look like?

  • New hires who don’t ask questions.
  • New hires who appear overwhelmed or disengaged.
  • New hires who don’t interact with their colleagues.

How do you treat post-hire shock?

  • Plan meeting with the mentor or supervisor. Maybe meeting Monday and Friday for the first month will help get everyone on the same page. You can always adjust the frequency down the line.
  • Solicit feedback from the employee and mentor, separately.
  • Always promote growth and learning. Have training resources on hand to help make the transition easier.

One creative way to engage new employees could include the creation of an employee section on the website. Employees can have their headshots taken and then write fun facts about them to post on the website! This is a great way for your team to become more familiar with each other and learn some fun new facts about the people they work with everyday!
