This is Part 3 of a three part series on management/colleague relationships.  It is imperative to maintain a positive relationship with your manager or supervisor.  This person is to assist you in the attainment of your own personal professional goals while increasing your effectiveness and satisfaction in your present work situation.  There has to be foundation of mutual respect.

In order to foster a meaningful relationship, four discussions should occur:

  • Request Learning Possibilities: The possibilities could include mentoring in your organization or training programs in house or by outside sources.  It is of benefit to an employer to encourage and provide additional training to their existing staff.  This indicates a “value” statement of worth and confidence in the staff.  Loyalty and attrition is increased.
  • Evaluation of Current Performance: Do not wait for an annual review to discuss your current performance.   A monthly evaluation should be requested.  Evaluate your own performance and attitude objectively.  Be honest about areas that you feel could receive some improvement.  No one is perfect, so demonstrate your adaptability by being open to suggestions.
  • Establish Future Goals: Being happy and functional today doesn’t mean that will continue forever.  Request assistance with establishing future attainable goals.  Be honest with your expectations and be open for a discussion regarding the future expectations of your employer.
  • Define Yourself: You were chosen for the position that you now occupy.  It is important to know exactly why you were chosen.  This will open the discussion to utilizing your specific skills and assets in the present and the future.

Supervisors are aware that they look good only if their staff is productive.  In order to maintain productivity it is imperative to maintain positive relationships with the entire staff.  It is also necessary for the staff to maintain a positive relationship with the supervisor if they are to succeed individually and collectively.
