Working from home can benefit both employees and employers. While some believe that 40 hours per week in the office is the only way that work gets done, there is growing support for workers who find themselves more productive when working from home. The answer to the question of whether or not it’s right for the employee probably depends on each person’s work style and also the type of work that is done.

The tech industry is one that is often known for its flexible schedules and telecommuting opportunities. Programmers and designers, for example, need long stretches of uninterrupted time in order to get their work done. Some feel that, when working in an office environment, they are constantly distracted by co-workers, phones, and email. Working in the controlled environment of home means they are allowed longer hours of focus and can get more work done. Telecommuters can still stay connected to the office at all times and be available when necessary, but also have the flexibility to “unplug” and focus on their work with little to no distraction. Employees are able to complete their tasks faster and with fewer mistakes.
