Several years ago, my friend’s sister called her out. They were discussing her mom’s 80th birthday party and she was complaining (whining, actually) that she was on a strict budget and couldn’t contribute much, financially, to the party. That’s when her sister not-so-gently pointed out that she seemed to have plenty of cash to pay for the medical needs of their beloved pooch. Moment of truth; my friend had to be honest with herself. She was complaining about being broke, yet would plunk down major bucks, in a heartbeat, at the vet’s office. Ouch. Honesty bites. You could argue that paying for a party is a luxury compared to the necessity of vet care but, still, she chose. And no one had to like her choice, or agree with it for that matter. She told me she is forever grateful for that lesson and it has served her well in other areas of her life, especially when she starts to complain about lacking something.

In 2018, let’s resolve to be honest with ourselves about the choices we make. How we spend our time, our money, our energy. Let’s encourage each other to recognize when we’ve made a choice and support each other if adjustments are needed. And as with all goals, especially New Year’s ones, in January you’re making choices so that, in March, you’re making progress.
