It’s September, which usually signals Back-To-School time and new routines. While the kids return to school, some of us might be returning to the workforce or looking for a new position. If it’s time for you to start your job search, follow the tips below to help the process go smoothly.

1-Be prepared. Having an updated resume is always a good idea, even when you’re not actively looking. Also, keep a hard copy on hand for any unexpected opportunities. In addition to your resume, also update your on-line job search tools, such as your LinkedIn profile, and create or revise a basic cover letter. Even though you’ll need to customize your cover and resume to fit a particular position, having a basic copy of each will get you started.

2-Use your network. If you have a specific position or company you’re interested in, check in with your professional network to see if they have any contacts at the company. There is a better chance your resume will reach the right person if you can send it to someone specific at the company. Using your connections works even better if you’ve kept in regular contact with them, rather than calling out of the blue when you need a favor.

3-Present the real you. When revising your job search tools, it’s OK to get a little creative. Go ahead and add some personality to your resume and cover letter, as long as you keep it professional. If you have any doubts, ask a friend or network colleague to read them over.

4-Use key words from the job description or posting. Without going overboard on the jargon or acronyms, use some of the words from the position description or job post in your resume. This is one way of customizing your resume to fit a particular position and, although it takes time, it’s worth the effort. Companies use software that recognizes job-related words so why not give yourself the best chance of having your resume selected?

Use these ideas to jump-start your search. You’ll be more prepared when you begin the application process and you can take advantage of unexpected opportunities that come your way.
