Congrats, you did it, you received the job offer! It’s time to celebrate! Or is it?  Only you can decide if the offer is acceptable as it stands, or if there are aspects that you would like to put up for negotiation.

It is very easy to get caught up in the moment and quickly say “yes!” when receiving an offer.  Always, take a deep breath and request 24-48 hours to review the offer.  In this time, have a heart-to-heart with yourself or someone you trust.  It this opportunity a good fit for you?  Is the salary something you are comfortable with?  It is a good idea to write the pros and cons for each role. Negotiating an offer can be tricky. The key in negotiating a job offer is to put everything on the table at one time.

What if negotiations don’t produce the desired result?  Sometimes it is better to keep looking for an opportunity that is a better fit, especially if the offer doesn’t feel right.  In this situation it is best to either call or send a letter respectfully declining the offer.  It is best to keep this short and simple. Let the hiring manager know that you appreciate their consideration.  It important to do this as soon as you have made your decision.  It is huge to always listen to your instinct. If you see red flags, walk away!

Getting a job offer is so exciting but make sure to take some time to step back and think about the bigger picture before jumping to an answer right away!
