Writing a great Thank you note is a lost art in today’s technological society but it may be what determines if you move forward so it shouldn’t be taken lightly. Luckily, it is extremely simple to do! Thanking the interviewer(s) is the first step in the post-interview follow-up process.  An email thanking them for their time is a great first step.  Going one step further and writing a thoughtful thank you note shows professionalism.

It is very important that you follow up in a timely manner.  Make sure you send your email by end of day the following day.  As you hit send on the email, drop the written note in the mail.  Make sure you double check your email to make sure it went through as emails often can get stuck in the outbox!

A great email thank you note could be as simple as: “Thank you for taking the time to meet with me today.  It was a pleasure to learn more about the opportunity at ABC Corporation.  I look forward to hearing from you soon.”

The thank you note should be thoughtful and very sincere. You want to highlight certain things that excite you about the role and the company. If writing numerous notes, make sure they are all different and unique in some way. You want everyone you spoke with to feel like you took time to make these notes specific to your time spent meeting with them.

After sending a thank you note, it is okay to contact the interviewer, via email, if you have not heard anything within the time frame you were given in the interview.  This polite inquiry shows that you are still interested in the opportunity. These types of inquiries usually generate a response.

Proper post-interview follow-up can make all the difference.  It shows a level of professionalism that hiring managers desire on their teams. Saying Thank You, as simple as it sounds may be what gets you to the next round of interviews!
